Federal Byelection Information

A federal byelection is set to take place in Vaughan on Nov. 29, 2010.

It was called by Prime Minister Stephen Harper after Liberal MP Maurizio Bevilacqua stepped down to run in the municipal election (he won, by the way.)

There’s lots of information about voting at Elections Canada.

It’s going to be an interesting race: the riding has been a Liberal stronghold for a long, long time. But the Conservatives have brought in former Ontario top cop Julian Fantino, whose name is pretty recognizable. Will Vaughan turn blue like it’s neighbouring Thornhill? (In 2008, Liberal Susan Kadis lost her seat to Conservative Peter Kent.)

Maurizio Bevilacqua won pretty handily in 2008. But, his margin of victory did get a bit slimmer than the previous election.

Here’s the numbers:

Liberal, Maurizio Bevilacqua: 27,773
Conservative, Richard Lorello: 19,390
NDP, Vicky Wilkin: 5,442
Green, Adrian Visentin: 3.870

In 2006, Bevilacqua got 36,968 votes to the second-place Conservatives Richard Majkot’s 16,124.

Leslie Bory  (Independent)

Paolo Fabrizio  (Libertarian Party of Canada)

Julian Fantino  (Conservative Party of Canada)
