Alan Shefman, the current Councillor for Ward 5, City of Vaughan will be contesting the 2010 municipal election.

Shefman was first elected to Council in a by-election in 2004. He was re-elected in 2006. Previous to his by-election victory, Shefman was elected twice to the York Region District School Board. His Ward is situated in the southeast corner of the City. As a result of a recent OMB decision, Ward 5 is now the largest Ward in the City of Vaughan with approximately 45,000 electors. The next largest ward has just over 36,000 electors.

In his over five years as a municipal councillor, Alan Shefman has led a variety of issues at the City. Currently he is Chair of the Accountability and Transparency, Community Equity and Diversity and the Greening Vaughan Advisory Committees. He is Vice Chair of the Environment Committee as well. Besides the committees that he leads, Alan Shefman currently sits on fifteen other City, Regional and local committees.

In the late fall of 2009 Shefman was selected by his colleagues to Chair the City of Vaughan Budget Committee. That Committee has recently completed its deliberations and will be presenting the proposed 2010 budget to Council on January 18, 2010.

Alan Shefman has lived in Vaughan since 1982. He is married to Francine Shefman. Their two children, Corey and Howard, are both attending university.

Shefman has a diverse volunteer and professional background including:

⎢ Establishing and managing one of Canada’s foremost human rights consulting firms,
⎢ Being a senior manager at the Ontario Human Rights Commission,
⎢ National Director of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada,
⎢ Consulting on urban and regional planning and environmental issues,
⎢ Working with the Government of the Northwest Territories in their Local Government Department
