Fire! (got your attention?): Vaughan Fire Fighters Association picks four candidates to back

8 Oct

The Vaughan Professional Fire Fighters’ Association has officially endorsed four candidates in Vaughan’s municipal election. They sent out this press release late last night.

They aren’t backing any mayoral, ward 1 or ward 5 candidates. I’ll try to find out the details why not.

Ed. Note: I received word from the fire fighters’ association president Mike Doyle that “due to our limited resources, we’ve had to limit where we focus our
support. Generally, our support comes with more than an endorsement, it also comes with campaign work from our members as well.”

“We feel this team of 4 really “get it” when it comes to providing their firefighters with the tools to make a difference in the lives of the citizens of Vaughan,” he wrote in an email.

Earlier this week, York Regional Police chief Armand La Barge sent out a statement reminding residents he’s not endorsing anyone and nor is the police force.

Do you think it’s appropriate for the firefighters association to do so? I am not sure if they have in the past (I’ll try to find that out too)

On the Vaughan firefighters site, they claim to have been looking for candidates that place public safety as a high priority.

Then, they go and endorse a councillor who was seen (and later admitted) parking in a handicap spot.

All civil servants should remain politically neutral. They should not endorse anyone.
