Anti-Fantino group to rally in Vaughan

14 Nov

A group calling themselves “Conservatives Against Fantino” is set to rally outside Julian Fantino’s Vaughan campaign headquarters this afternoon, with other rallies set for Nov. 20, 21, 27 and 28.

A press release distributed by the group  indicated its a registered with Elections Canada as a third party, which hasn’t been confirmed by Elections Canada. Gary McHale, the group’s executive director, did email us a copy of the groups application for third party status. A story in the Globe and Mail suggested the group’s request for third party status was rejected because its name is too similar to the Conservative Party of Canada.

Registered third party status means a group can fundraise more than $500 to advertise support or opposition to a candidate.

According to its website, Conservatives Against Fantino was created “by long-time Conservative Party supporters who have invested four years exposing and opposing Julian Fantino’s racial policing policies and bully tactics against Caledonia residents, politicians and activists.”

In the site’s FAQ section, question number one reads: WHO ARE YOU, WHY ARE YOU QUALIFIED TO SPEAK OUT ON FANTINO’S CALEDONIA RECORD, AND ARE YOU REALLY CONSERVATIVE PARTY SUPPORTERS?

The answer: The leaders of this campaign are Gary McHale and Mark Vandermaas, two of the key activists involved in exposing and opposing racial policing in Caledonia that has victimized both native and non-natives for the past four years. We have 3.5 years experience of being targeted by Fantino and dealing with him and his lawyers through the courts, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, the Ontario Police Services Act complaint process and the media.
