Fantino to critics: Get a reality check

Julian Fantino won’t be attending tonight’s public debate at Vellore Village Community Centre, but he says critics who accuse him of hiding “need a reality check.”

“I can’t attend. It’s a very simple issue,” Fantino said. “There’s a previous, long-established commitment that involves my family and other people who are attending a memorial mass,  not only for my in-laws. There’s another anniversary involved at a seniors’ residence where myself and my wife and family have volunteered for a good long time. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is.”

Speaking to reporters at an announcement declaring his support for the Vaughan Health Campus of Care at Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, Fantino said he has other priorities.

He reiterated he’ll be attending a memorial service for his mother in-law at a retirement residence tonight instead of dueling the other candidates at the only live debate with an audience scheduled for the by-election campaign.

However he did participate in a taped debate at Rogers Television that will air at the same time as the public debate this evening.

“We’ve been visible, engaged, out there all the time,” Fantino said. “The people who have called my campaign peek-a-boo – they need to have a reality check, they really do.”

For the past few weeks, other candidates have attacked the Conservative Fantino, viewed by some as the front-runner in the race, for not agreeing to meet them in public debate. The criticism has been especially loud from Liberal candidate Tony Genco, whose campaign has sent out numerous messages complaining about the issue.

Fantino called the announcement this morning to reiterate he would petition the federal government to provide money for infrastructure related to building a hospital in Vaughan, such as storm water management, sewers and bridges.

He was joined by Vaughan Health Campus of Care chair Michael DeGasperis, as well as Woodbridge doctor Robert Maggisano. Both men praised Fantino for having supported the proposed hospital project over the years and for having helped raise money for it as well.

Is that how Fantino is going to explain being the people’s representative too? Previous, long-established commitments that involves his family? Ptui, I’m voting Green for the first time!
